About Moonlighters
We build for the businesses doing the real work.
Moonlighters is a digital studio for companies that want their website, application or online presence to be as considered as the rest of their business. We design, we engineer and we explain, in that order and all the way through.
Philosophy
Our philosophy
Moonlight is reflected light. Our job is to make your business visible, not to make ourselves the center of the story.
We believe good digital work is quiet in the right ways. It loads quickly, reads clearly, works on the phone in someone’s hand and does not need a manual. When it is done well, people notice your business, not the website.
That takes care rather than spectacle: understanding the people you serve, choosing tools that suit the job, and paying attention to the details most visitors never consciously see but always feel.
Why Moonlighters exists
Too many good businesses are let down by their digital presence.
Plenty of capable, trustworthy businesses are represented online by websites that are slow, hard to update or vague about what they actually do. Others are held back by software that never quite fitted the way they work, or by a project that went quiet halfway through.
Often the choice seems to be between a very cheap template that nobody maintains and an expensive agency process that is built for much larger companies. Moonlighters exists for the space in between: work that is carefully designed and properly engineered, scoped to what a growing business genuinely needs, and explained in plain language.
We want clients to finish a project understanding what they have, how to look after it and what to do next.
Our approach
Design and engineering, in the same conversation.
Separating the two is where many projects lose quality. We keep them together from the first sketch to the final deployment.
How we design
- Content first. We work out what needs to be said before deciding how it should look.
- Built around tasks. Every page has a job, whether that is explaining a service, comparing options or getting in touch.
- Accessible by default. Readable contrast, logical headings, keyboard support and clear form feedback are part of the design, not a retrofit.
- Distinctive, not decorative. A visual identity that fits your business instead of following whatever template is popular this year.
How we engineer
- Right-sized technology. A simple site does not need a complex framework, and a multi-user application should not be held together with plugins.
- Performance as a requirement. Lean pages, optimized images and careful use of scripts so the site stays fast on ordinary mobile connections.
- Security as routine. Validated input, protected configuration, sensible permissions and dependencies that are kept up to date.
- Maintainable code. Organized, documented work that you or another developer can understand and extend later.
Practical by design
Affordable shouldn’t mean disposable.
We keep projects accessible by being disciplined about scope, not by skipping the essentials.
-
01
Scope that matches the goal
We help you separate what is needed for launch from what would be nice later, so the first release does its job without unnecessary cost.
-
02
Proven tools where they fit
If a reliable existing platform or library solves part of the problem, we use it rather than rebuilding it from scratch at your expense.
-
03
Phased delivery
Larger ideas can be built in stages, with each phase useful on its own and informed by how people actually use the previous one.
-
04
Essentials that are never optional
Responsive layouts, basic accessibility, security hygiene, clean markup for search engines and a proper handover are included in the way we work.
Working with clients
A working relationship, not a transaction.
Projects go better when both sides know what to expect. These are the habits we bring to every engagement.
-
Listen first
We ask about your customers, your constraints and what success looks like before suggesting solutions.
-
Put it in writing
Scope, priorities and decisions are documented, so there is a shared reference when questions come up.
-
Show the work early
You see structure, designs and working previews as they develop, not only at the end.
-
Explain trade-offs
When there are options, we tell you what each one costs and what it gives you, then you decide.
-
Hand over properly
You receive access, guidance and the information needed to run what we built, with support available if you want it.
Principles
Four words we hold ourselves to.
Clarity
In what we build and how we talk about it. Clear pages, clear proposals, clear answers. If something is uncertain, we say so.
Craftsmanship
Care for the details that separate work that functions from work that feels right: spacing, wording, edge cases, loading states.
Accountability
We do what we agreed, flag problems early, and take responsibility for fixing our own mistakes.
Continuous improvement
Launch is a starting point. We learn from how people use what we build and keep refining it, and our own process, over time.
Who we help
Built for businesses at different stages.
From a first website to a growing product, the questions change but the standard of work does not.
-
Startups and founders
Validating an idea, launching an MVP or replacing early shortcuts with something sturdier.
-
Small and mid-sized businesses
Modernizing an outdated site, adding online booking or connecting systems that do not talk to each other.
-
Local businesses and service providers
Being found by nearby customers and making it easy for them to call, visit or book.
-
E-commerce brands
Building or improving stores where product discovery, checkout and order handling all need to work.
-
Educational institutions
Clear information for students and parents, admissions inquiries and content that is easy for staff to update.
-
Growing companies
Teams that need a reliable technology partner for ongoing design, development and improvement work.
Next step
Let’s talk about what you’re building.
Whether it is a first website or the next version of your product, we’re happy to discuss it and suggest a sensible starting point.
